Vehicles. He is Mr. S. G. Forsyth, a London-born Scot who was awarded the M.B.E. in 1960 for his part in the company's export drive from 1947. Mr. Forsyth relinquished his post as managing director of Ford-Sweden to take his new job. From his Dagenham office he will, says the company, direct plans to make Ford of Britain one of the biggest truck producers in the world". Mr. Forsyth is a longserving member of the company; he began his career in 1934 as a "picker" in the service stores. Later he moved to the purchasing department and was appointed a "chaser". In 1939 he was promoted to assistant buyer and in 1947 was transferred to the export sales department as a senior assistant, in which capacity he travelled widely. In 1953 he became manager of the export division and in 1959 general sales manager of the division, until he went to Sweden. A member of the company who worked under him for 13 years said: " He works 23 hrs. 59 min. every day and has a fabulous sense of fun. 14e supports Arsenal and likes to think he is a good golfer. He is a good thinker and a very shrewd business man".

In new works appointments announced by Leyland Motors Ltd., Mr. F. Bullough becomes Spurner works manager, Mr. L. Murray becomes Farington works manager, Mr. L. Southworth becomes Chorley works manager and Mr. R. K. Robinson is appointed production manager. Mr. Bullough has been factory manager at the Spurrier works since 1961. Mr. Murray, who also becomes works manager of the company's North and South works in his new post, was works manager of the Chorley service factory for the past two years. He is succeeded at Chorley by Mr. Southworth, who has been chief superintendent at the Farington factory and North and South works since February of this year. Mr. Robinson has been planning controller at Leyland Motors since 1951 and will be responsible to Mr. A. Hosker, works director.
Mr. E. B. Wainwright has been appointed area sales manager in the U.K. for R. and I. Dick Ltd., Blackburn.
Mr. A. E. Martin and Hesketh, works manager engineer respectively have board of Wellworthy Ltd.

Mr. J. IL and chief joined the Mr. Dennis Foster, sales director of Dennis Bros. Ltd., left for the United States last week, where he is "to examine certain specialized vehicles, and to review the possible interest in the United Kingdom ". He will be visiting New York, Washington and other major cities.
Following the appointment of Mr. G. C. Harding as general manager of Wallasey passenger transport department, the principal assistant of what was the Motor Bus Dept., Mr. R. G. Brown, and the principal assistant of what was the Ferries Dept., Mr. C. B. Sandland, have been appointed joint deputy passenger transport general managers. Mr. Brown, who is 59, joined the department in 1920 and Mr. Sandland, who is 40, joined the Ferries Department in 1947.
Following the recent retirement of Mr. T. Anthonies, chief engineer of the Sheffield transport department, Mr. A. E. Bale has been promoted from works engineer to replace him. Mr. Bale, 48, has served the department for 31 years having first joined as an apprentice motor fitter in 1932. After war time service with the R.A.S.C, he was promoted to technical assistant directly under Mr. Anthonies' control, and later became works engineer. As chief engineer he will be responsible for the mechanical efficiency of a fleet of some 820 buses and 50 miscellaneous vehicles, and for the maintenance of plant and equipment in the five garages, central workshops and head offices.
Sr Patrick Hennessy, chairman of the Ford Motor Co. Ltd., has accepted nomination as president of the Motor and Cycle Trades Benevolent Fund, to succeed Rover chairman Mr. L. G. T. Farmer. The new president will be elected at the Ben. A.G.M. in the early months of 1964.
Following changes in the distributive territories of Stewart and Ardern for Morris commercial vehicles with the appointment of their Southend branch as Morris commercial distributors for south-east Essex, a number of new management appointments have been made. Mr. A. E. Humphries has been appointed retail sales manager, based at S. and A.'s Morris Commercial House, Queensbury Road, Wembley, Middlesex. Mr. S. J. Wheatley has been appointed retail sales manager, based at Morris Commercial House, Camberwell Station Road, London, S.E.5. Mr. G. F. Oldfield is manager of S. and A.'s Southend-on-Sea branch, together with sales executive for commercial vehicles, Mr. C. J. Carder.
Mr. I. G. Osborne, manager of Firestone London division, has been appointed divisional sales co-ordinator. with headquarters at Brentford. Mr. L. S. Bruce, East London district manager, has in turn been appointed London divisional manager. Clic IL M. Jones, a member of Rhyl Council and Flintshire County Council, has been appointed a deputy Traffic Commissioner for the North West area.
Mr. A. C. Ledger, general manager and secretary of W. L. Thurgood (Coachbuilders) Ltd., has had to retire through ill health after 38 years with the company. Making this announcement with regret, Mr. W. L. Thurgood, managing director, said: "Mr. Ledger has been a most zealous and conscientious member of the firm and will be greatly missed ".
Mr. W. E. Bates has been appointed traffic manager, British Road Services Ltd. Mr. Bates was employed at the Birmingham office of North Western Transport Services Ltd. from 1930 until mobilized with the supplementary reserve, of which he was a member, in 1939 for service in the R.E. Movement Control until 1945. In 1946 he was appointed Newcastle upon Tyne manager of N.W.T.S., and became Bolton/Bury group manager for British Road Services in 1949. He has been divisional traffic officer, Midland division, since January, 1956. Mr. Bates was awarded the M.B.E. in the 1946 New Year Honours for service with Movement Control in connection with the invasion of Europe.
Pinder has been superintendent for of the East Kent Mr. Pinder is at present assistant to the Brighton area manager of Southdown Motor Services Ltd. He will take up his new duties in January, 1964.
Mr. W. T. E. appointed as district the Folkestone area Road Car Co. Ltd.
Mr. D. H. Henri has been appointed general sales manager of the ,Britax group, accessory manufacturers. Mr. G. Hurst, formerly technical manager becomes assistant group sales manager and Mr. G. Hayward becomes technical and competitions manager.
Obituary
WIE regret to record the deaths of Mr. VY 3. S. Bailey, Mr. L. G. Burleigh and Mr. A. Fletcher. Mr. Bailey, managing director of I. S. Bailey (Low Loaders) Ltd., Manchester, has died at the age of 60. For several years he was a member of the national council of the National Conference of Road Transport Clearing Houses and a former chairman of its North Western area. Mr. Burleigh, chairman of the London transport users' consultative committee since 1959, died recently. He had been with I.C:I. Ltd. for 31 years and was transport officer when he retired in 1959. Mr. Burleigh was made C.B.-E. in the Queen's Birthday Honours last year. Mr. Fletcher, of Edinburgh, died in hospital last week. He was due to retire at Christmas and had been a staff representative of Perkins Engines Ltd.. Peterborough, for nearly 25 years.
