tenance will be stressed at a special meeting to be held tonight (Friday) at Sandside, near Milnthorpe (Westmorland), The gathering has been arranged by the Maintenance Advisory Committee for Cumberland, Westmorland and Barrow-in-Furness.

At 7.15 p.m. a talk will be given at Storth Village Hall by Mr. R. Bowman of Hudson Engineers (Sandside) Ltd., after which he and Mr. H. Boon, of Athersmith Bros. Ltd., hauliers, will answer questions. Transport will then be available to take the party to the Hudson premises, where maintenance arrangements and work in hand will he displayed for inspection.

The meeting is one of a series to he held throughout the area this winter.

Scottish L.D.O.Y.

ASCOTTISH eliminating round in the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition is to be held next year, probably in May or June, This was agreed unanimously at a meeting last week arranged by the Scottish division of the T.R.T.A. and attended by representatives of B.R.S.. G.P.O., T.G.W.U.. Ro.S.P.A., the Army, and S.P.D. Ltd.

Lord Bruce has been invited to become chairman of the organizing committee; the T.R.T.A.'s Scottish divisional cha:rman, Mr. E. C. Eguleton, has been elected vice-chairman of the committee and the divisional secretary, Mr. J. 0. Hastie, has been .elected secretary and treasurer..

This revival of the Scottish competition will be undertaken in association with the organizing committee in England and it is intended that Scottish representatives should he appointed to serve on the national committee—one is expected to be Mr. Hastic.

There will he a meeting on December 10, when an executive committee will go further into the details of the organization of the contest.

Materials Handling Report

A REPORT on "Materials Handling r't in Relation to the Design of Factories and Warehouses", by a study group convened, by the Royal institute of British Architects, has just been published. Intended principally as a general guide to architects, engineers and manufacturers when buildings are being planned, it contains references to the layouts and facilities required_ for internal and external transport, though mainly in general terms. It does, however, refer to the standard loading dock height of 48 in. advocated where platform vehicles of 5to 15-ton capacity are to be used.
