Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OOD accounts reach us of a new Notek head-lamp mask marketed by the Equipment and Engineering Co., Ltd., 2 and 3, Norfolk Street, Strand, London, W.C.2. It is suitable only for the Notek flat-topped-beam lamp and the last-named, when equipped with this mask, can function either as a black-nut head lamp, conforming with Ministry of Transport requirements, or as a fog-lamp, giving the fall light permissible under suitably foggy conditions.

Alone, the mask is offered at 12s. 6d., whilst head lamp and mask complete cost £3 12s. 6d. Features include an exceptionally wide beam of uniform intensity, provision for controlling the strength of the beam when the lamp is operating as a fog light, and hermetically sealed construction which prevents the ingress of dirt, or moisture harmful to the

efficiency of the instrument. • For ordinary black-out driving, light is emitted from only one aperture, taking the form of a horizontal slot, the walls of which project forwards from the face of the lamp more or less as in conventional designs. Below this, and hinged along the top edge, • is' a shutter, which can obscure or expose a large part of the remaining area of the lens, against which it normally lies.

Two easily released catches hold the shutter shut, whilst a convenient projecting piece enables it to be pulled open, forwards and upwards, to any desired position "within about 70 degrees, by means of the finger and thumb.

Since the use of masked head lamps during "Alert " periods has been made legal, and with the approach of the time of year when foggy weather is to be expected, a lamp combining characteristics suitable for both, and • functioning with marked efficiency, under either condition, must definitely have a strong appeal to commercialvehicle operators.
