THE Department of Transport is likely to decide within the next few days if Tyne and Wear County Council can impose a 25 per cent rise in tunnel charges.
The council wanted to increase the toll charge for using the Tyne Tunnel to 40p, an increase of 25 per cent, and it claimed that loan charges were adding another £1 million to the cost of operating the cross-Tyne link.
But the DTp was called in to rule on the increase after Newcastle, Gateshead and South Tyneside councils all lodged objections to the increase.
