At a ceremony to mark the event at King's Norton railhead in Birmingham last week, Cartransport managing director (Graham Roberts said that this year his firm, part of the Special 'Traffics Group of the National Freight Consortium, will carry over 250,000 vehicles.
Vehicles made by BL at Longbridge and cars from the Talbot plant at Ryton will be brought to the railhead by 20 to 30 road car transporters a day to be sent overnight by rail to Cartransports Scottish depot at Bathgate.
"Railfreight is competitive and its services must always be considered when designing the optimum distribution system," Mr Roberts said.
"In this instance, the railing costs were further improved by the introduction of the new Standard Wagon Autic." Traditional designs denied the transporter the opportunity to use all the available top-deck space.
