THE International Road Transport Union has awarded its Grand Prix d'Honneur to a West German lorry driver.
In May 14, 1980 Heinz Heyder of Hans Poppel Speditions GmbH in Regensburg, averted a disaster in Tirschenreuth, West Germany, where his petrol
tanker vehicle caught fire.
Mr Heyder tried unsuccessfully to put the fire out and so drove the vehicle away from inhabited areas. Passers by saw the danger and called the fire brigade who extinguished the fire.
An international jury awarded him a diploma, a gold badge, and a cash award.
