Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THIS week's prizewinner is Mr. A. Nichols, of Nazeing, nr. Waltham Abbey, Essex. He uses, he says, a good method to prevent loosening of U-bolt nuts ...occurring. When a vehicle is purchased (esPeciaIly in the 5-8-ton range) he removes the rear U-bolt nuts and substitutes special blanked end nuts which have a ;+-in. diameter hole drilled through

them at the bottom end ofthe thread.

Before fitting, these nuts -are loaded with graphited grease or similar thick grease and pulled down really hard. Then a length of stout wire is passed through the holes of each pair of bolts and locked up. It is a simple task to cut the wire, check for tightness, and rewire. This operation has then only to be repeated when a spring has been replaced.

Comments Handyman: The troubles

described centre around what should be a dead" area of the spring. My answer is still the short Period inspection and n ip-up."

It is up to you. We have the money. Do you have any ideas ?
