PLAN for a new £45,000 bus station at Ilkeston, Derbyshire, was described s "lavish and too costly" and conmicrit to only one fifth of the town's assengers, at an inquiry held by the ast Midland Traffic Commissioners in lottingharn last week.

The general manager of Trent. Mr. L. ,awlinson, said that each week only .700 passengers used buses to the White .ion Square, whereas 27,000 travelled to le Market Place. He objected to the roposed site not only on the grounds tat it would be "out of the way ", but lso because, he said, the rent and land psis amounted to 12,600 annually,. A ermanent station should be provided in le Market Place, he added.

Mr, Philip English, representing all the bjectors except Barton. said the plan as lavish and too costly for everyday assengers. This was denied by the keston Borough Surveyor, Mr. A. S. fartin. He said there would be a need )1. all 13 standing bays and a waiting ay for four vehicles. But he agreed that le building would have no public conenience and no café. The Minister had iggested that it would be best if private tterprise were left to run a café.

The local police also backed, the proosal. Chief Insp. S. Loydall said: "We sink that the existing bus station has ecome very dangerous." In bad cattier, passengers sheltered across the )ad and dashed out when their bus opeared, he went on. Cars were a mger to. passengers and other pedesians and it would be a great advantage the bus station was built on the proased site.
