PRACTICAL steps towards co-operation among hauliers were reportec by the Road Haulage Association this week; they concern schemes in Cheshire and Hampshire.
In Cheshire, a group of hauliers a1 present carrying milk in churns to dairies in Manchester have organized what is believed to be the first co-operative experiment in the collection of milk in bulk from farms. The scheme, which is to start operating on September 1, has been adopted by the Milk Marketing Board. A new company, North Western Milk Carriers Ltd., is being set up for the purpose by the four hauliers concerned: J. S. Basford of Knutsford. C. A. Ryder of Northwich, W. P. Twibell of Mobberley, and F. Swain and Sons Ltd. of Prestbury. Macclesfield. Each principal will be a director of North Western Milk Carriers and Mr. J. S. Basford will be chairman.
The Milk Marketing Board's growing preference for tanker collections, and the fact that one tanker can do the collecting work of three churn vehicles, has influenced the four hauliers' decision to link up in the milk sphere; they will continue their own independent general haulage work. North Western will initially operate one tanker, collecting from Cheshire farms for delivery to Healds Dairies, Didsbury.
In the Portsmouth sub-area ofthe
R.H.A., four hauliers operating A-licensed platform lorries have formed a joint company, Southern Ports Hauliers Ltd., to handle "large consignments of suitable traffics". One of the first operations is to carry 50 tons of tomatoes daily to the Midlands for the Guernsey Tomato Marketing Board.
The four hauliers in this scheme, previously competitors for traffic, are A. Burnett and Sons Transport Ltd., T. Cobb and Sons Ltd., Market Deliveries Ltd. (all of Portsmouth) and Percy Powell Ltd. of Horndean.
