AS the result of the success attained by previous light-weight models of large-load capacity, Albion Motors, Ltd., Scotstoun, Glasgow, W.4, has now produced a new 5ftonner, designed throughout to fall within the 2i-ton-unIaden-weight category for the complete vehicle.
This is not a lower-capacity vehicle with a guaranteed overload, hut one carrying the full backing of the maker. The chassis weight, with 34-in. by 7-in. tyres, is only 381 cwt., which allows 'bodywork of normal construction to be fitted within the required weight limit. The rated gross load, i.e„ the body plus useful load, is 6 tons 2 cwt., and the chassis is offered as a forward-control model with a standard wheelbase of 14 ft., permitting an inside body length of 14 ft. 6 ins.
There is no skimping in the specification, which includes triple Dewandre four-wheel brakes, 12-volt constantvoltage lighting set, , and a torsional vibration damper on the two-piece cardan shaft, which has Hardy Spicer needle-roller-bearing universal joints.
The bore and stroke cif the fourcylindered engine are 31 ins. and 50 ins, respectively, and it gives a b.h.p. of 65 at 2,400 r.p.m. The cylinders and upper half of the crankcase are cast in one, with pressed-in liners and renewable exhaust-valve seats. Three bearings are used for both the crankshaft and camshaft. The valves are all at the near side.
Lubrication is on the forced-feed system, and the cooling water is circulated by an impeller-type pump driven from the front of the dynamo drive.
A vertical Zenith carburetter provides the mixture, and the 15-gallon tank is mounted on the near-side frame member. The drive is taken through a singledry-plate clutch With the spigot in' a roller hearing, a hall bearing being provided for tha clutch withdrawal.
The four-speed gearbox forms a unit with the engine, the whole being threepoint suspended. The ratios are: top, direct; third, 1.77 to 1; second, 2.96 to 1; first, 5.63 to 1.
A one-piece alloy-steel forging forms the body of the rear axle, which is of the fully floating type with a worm gear of 6/to 1 ratio.
The, rear, suspension is by 4-ft. 6-in. and the front by 3-ft. 3-in, springs, The turning 'circle is 55 ft.
