• Tippers, and anything else that's related to the construction industry, including concrete mixers, are selling steadily, says Peter Hassan, who runs independent dealership Euro Wise in Aylesham, Kent.
"We've had a bit of a run on 8x4 tippers, and a lot of interest in some i8-tonners we had in stock," he adds. "We had a buyer leave Lincoln at 4am the other Sunday and arrive here at Sam to buy one."
Independent trader Robert Reynolds agrees: "The tipper market is very buoyant. We can always sell 6x4s and we've got a waiting list for 8x4s, especially with aggregate bodies." Reynolds shares the con cern of franchised dealers about the effect of foot and mouth--"a lot of farmers are also involved in haulage," he points out—but he is particularly worried about the number of well-known transport businesses asking for Saturday auctions to be organised at their premises.
They're either scaling their operations down drastically or shutting up shop completely, and want to sell everything off, he says.
"I'm sitting here looking at in files on companies that are closing down," Reynold concludes. "They're all decent haulage concerns that have been in the business for a long time, and it's tragic."
