• BRS Western is running trials with two demountable trailer bodies with hydraulically-powered legs on a contract servicing Sealink's cross-Channel jumbo ferries.
The two units, each costing twice the price of a conventional body, have slashed turn-round times at ports by allowing staff to unload catering supplies while ships are still in motion.
The 7.9m insulated bodies, built on Ray Smith steel base frames by GRP Massey of Yorkshire, stand on hydraulic legs while the truck chassis is driven out and off the ship. The body can then be lowered to floor level for staff access.
The unit has chilled and frozen compartments running off the ship's electricity supply.
