I hear that there is to be an exchange of delegations later this year between the TGWU and the United States Teamsters' Union. As a precursor, John Lyons, secretary-treasurer of the San Diego "local", has met union MPs and looked over Tartan Arrow's Freightliner depot. "Much useful information was exchanged", I'm told.
It seems a trifle odd that international trade union contacts should flourish while in the UK each transport union maintains a rigidly independent posture. Massive transport reorganization requires that unions should practise some of the integration exercises they favour for the industry. Charity begins at home.
