Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN excursion operator's concentration on non-competitive destinations, to ' the exclusion of popular resorts, could not be a justification for doubling his existing. vehicle allowance with the avowed purpose of competing in the already congested field to Bridlington, Scarborough, Blackpool and Morecambe.

This was submitted to the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners at Leeds, on Monday, by Mr. J. Malcolm Barr, objecting on behalf of Wallace Arnold Tours, Ltd., and Feather Bros., Ltd., to an application by Messrs. Rogers Motor Coaches, Leeds, for modification of their excursion and tour licence from the Central Bus Station,. Leeds.

British Railways, the executors of S. Ledgard. and the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., also objected.

Mr. J. Evans, for the applicants, said that they were asking for 17 new destinations, including five twoor three-day excursions to places which could not conveniently be reached in a day. Destinations sought were Cromer and Yarmouth; Cheltenham and Blenheim Palace; Southend and London; Caernarvon and Barmouth; and Edinburgh and the Lakes.

A grant could not affect operators of extended tours, who drew their passengers from a. different clientele. Applicants were also asking for period excursions to Whitley Bay during July and August, and to increase the vehicle allowance on any one day from five to 10.

Mr. Barr submitted that Sunday was the most popular excursion day, yet an analysis of the applicants' figures showed that there were many vacant seats on Sunday. excursions during July and August, 1956. There was no justification for doubling the vehicle allowanee.

The hearing was adjourned,
