"EAST KENT" TO RUN DOVER SERVICES?

O(IN Tuesday, Dover Town Council to invite the East Kent Road Car Co„ Ltd., to assume responsibility for the provision of passenger transport in the borough, on the abandonment of the municipal tramways, which were established in 1897,

A provisional agreement has been negotiated by Mr. A. C. Baker, Birmingham Corporation's transport manager, who has been acting in a consultative capacity. It is proposed that the company should pay £3,000 towards the cost of reinstating the roads, compensate tramways workers who have to be dismissed, and pay the corporation 75 per cent., of the surplus revenue, which . is estimated at £2,055 per annum, after calculating operating costs on the average expenditure per vehicle-mile over the whole of the company's buses, with the addition of 3d. per vehicle-mile to cover depreciation and interest. If the revenue did not cover the charges, the corporation would reimburse the company.

INTERPRETATION OF APPEAL ORDER QUESTIONED.

THE Newcastle-York-Hull service of Mr. George Galley, of Newcastle, which has been the subject of much litigation, was again considered by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, last week. The application was for the backing of a licence granted by the Northern Commissioners.

Mr. F. G. Bibbings, for the applicant, said the point at issue concerned an Order made by the Minister of Transport, last September, which enabled Mr. Galley to operate two journeys in each direction, from October to April, and "one journey a day in each direction between Newcastle and Hull, from May to September."

c64 East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., interpreted this to mean that it permitted only one journey a day over the whole length, during the time that this company was on the road, but if the Order were thus interpreted, it would reduce the frequency of the service between Newcastle and York. Mr. Bibbings asked the Commissioners to back the licence already granted by the Northern Commissioners to permit two journeys between Newcastle and York, one of which should go through to Hull.

The Commissioners reserved their decision.

SOUTHDOWN ACQUISITION.

I T is reported that Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., has taken over the business and 10 buses of Mr. F. G. Tanner, who has, for a number of years, operated a service from Ports mouth to Hambleclon.

KEELING LICENCE TRANSFERS GRANTED.

THE Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners have sanctioned the transfer fo the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., of licences for express services and excursions and tours previously operated by Messrs. A. E. Keeling and Sons, Leeds. Although the transfer of the excursion and tour licences was opposed, on the ground that the West Yorkshire concern was not purchasing the vehicles, all the licence transfers have been granted, except in the case of three services between the centre of Leeds and local football grounds. The only independent operator of express services on the Bradford-Whitby route has now disappeared.

FOUR SHEFFIELD OPERATORS CO-ORDINATE.

FOCR Sheffield independent coach owners have now co-ordinated their operations under the title of Sheffield Motor Services, the head office of which is at 4, Castle Hill, Waingate, Sheffield. The operators concerned are Beauchief Coaches (Abbey Lane Motor Services, Ltd.), Mr. J. A. Armstrong, Hirst and Sweeting, Ltd., and Messrs. Hoggs Express Services. Lancashire, Yorkshire and Welsh coast express services, extended tours and excursions and private-hire work will be carried out.
