Brief Descriptions of Some of the Leading Products by British Manufacturers.
ONE of the best-known hydraulic press-making firms whose plants are largely used by tyre manufacturers and solid-tyre fitting concerns is Hollings and Guest, Ltd., of.Thimble Mill Lane, Birmingham, the firm being able to supply both large and small presses, to
gether with all necessary equipment. A notable type is that with a framework of rolled steel, riveted together to form four columns ; it is made in four sizes, with rains 10 ins., 12 ins., 14 ins. and 16 ins, in diameter, and for pressures ranging from 80 tons to 200 tons, The table and head, between which there is a maximum space of 30 ins., are each 4 ft. in diameter and provided with 12-in. holes to admit wheel bosses. The head is also slotted to enable the machine to be used in connection with wheels fitted with axles. A runway with lilting tackle can also be supplied. Another type of press, made for 154 and 200ton pressures, is supplied complete with electric motor and chain-driven hydraulic pump. Presses of the two-column type, with 48-in. diameter tables and heads, are also made in four sizes from 80-ton to 160-ton capacities, whilst for use in small establishments a light 50-ton machine, with. 8-in. ram and 42-in, diameter table, is also made, the machine being designed for operation by at hand-driven hydraulic pump.
Among other appliances supplied by this firm are belt-driven hydraulic pumps, a screw device for expanding to correct shape solid-tyre bands which have become oval or distorted, and machines for stretching or shrinking tyre bands.
Among, the firms specializing in the construction of solid-tyre removing and fitting presses is William Knott and Son, Ltd., of Fairfield Street, London Road, Manchester. The type " A " press, which weighs 63 tons and is designed for a working pressure of 13 tons per sq. in., is intended for use; in large establishments continually dealing, with heavy sseetion tyres. 'The hydraulic ram is 14 ins. in diameter and made of close-grained cast-iron working in a machined cast-steel cylinder. The cast-iron table, which rises and falls on four substantial pillars, has a recess in its centre to accommodate wheel hubs. Eight adjustable shoes 'made of special non-chipping metal are supplied, rendering the press suitable for all sizes of tyre up to 4 ft. diameter. The press is also supplied with a slotted top to accommodate wheels permanently secured to the axles. For use in establishments where the heavier sections of
tyre are only occasionally dealt with, the firm makes a type "B " press, which is lighter and less costly than the " A " pattern. Both presses can be actuated by either power or hand-operated pumps.
Various types of solid-tyre press are
made by Iddon Brothers, Ltd., of the Brookfield Ironworks, Leyland, Lancs. Dealing first with the full-head machine, which is designed to give a pressure up to 200 tons, it may be mentioned that thekbase is provided with strengthening ribs to take the pull of the four pillars. The ram has Ii diameter of 143 ins, and a stroke of 21 ins. The 4-Itdiameter press table is made with a number of concentric grooves for the accurate setting of the jack blocks, there being also a I2-in. central hole to accommodate Wheel bosses and hubs. The top of the press is a boxsection casting with a 13-in, central hole a n d concentric rings with those on the table. Wheel-lifting gear of a capacity of 1 ton is supplied as a self-contained part of the press. The Iddon slot-head press is on similar lines, except that the head is slotted in order to allow wheels which are solid with the axle to be dealt with. The lifting gear of this press takes the form of a runway supported by a strong casting and furnished with a special set of 1ton lifting tackle.
For small establishments, Iddon Brothers makes a light press designed for a working pressure of 1 ton per sq. in. on the ram, the latter having a diameter of 10 ins. The press' which will accommodate wheels up to 42 ins, in diameter, has a 39-in, table, the maximum clearance or daylight between table and head being 2 ft. g ins. The company also makes belt, gear and electric-driven and hand-operated hydraulic pumps for use in connection with their presses.
Tangyes, Ltd., of Cornwall Works, Birmingham, is another firm making hydraulic solid-tyre presses. Three types are made for pressures of respectively 60, 100 and 120 tons. The two smaller sizes are provided with four screwed pillars so that the head may be lowered or raised to give a clearance ranging from 18 ins, to a maximum of 36 ins. The 60-ton press has a 7-in. diameter ram and the 100-ton press one of 83 ins, diameter, the run-out in both eases being 24 ins. The table, which is approximately square in plan, has solid guides, whilst table, ram and head are each provided with a 4-in, hole to enable wheels fixed to axles to be dealt with. The belt-driven hydraulic pump designed for use with these presses has two plungers, 2 ins. and 1 in, diameter respectively, for working at a pressure of 10 cwt. or 323 ewt per sq. in. when running at 00 r.p.h. In the120-ton press the framework is built up of channel steel, the head and table being circular of a diameter of 42 ins. Both table and head are provided with four tee-slots,
whilst the head has a recess 20 ins, diameter by 4 ins, in depth to admit the bosses of wheels. The ram, which in this case has a diameter of 10 ins. and a stroke of 12 ins., can be operated either by belt-driven, electrically operated or hand-pressure pumps.
A solid-tyre fitting press with steel cylinder and double-ram hand pumps to give a total pressure up to 160 tons is also made by Fisher, Humphries and Co., Ltd., of Atlas Works, Pershore. Among the special features of the press are the steel-channel construction of the head and base, making it easy to erect owing to the lightness of the individual parts. At the same time, the advantages of four columns are retained, giving rigidity and freedom from tilting. The open space between the 'table and
the press head is 2 ft. 6 ins, and the stroke of the ram 18 ins. Another firm making tyre presses up to 200-tons capacity is the Tyre Service Co. (Eccles), Ltd., of Eccles, Manchester, one of this concern's machines being in use at the London depot of the Avon Indiarubber Co., Ltd. Llewelyns, Dews, bury Road, Leeds, are also sole agents for the Emidecau 200-ton press.
