IN the organization of the Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd., of Southport, the body-building department occupies a very important position.
The company has always made it a definite policy to supply, wherever possible, the complete vehicle, as they are of the opinion that the manufacturer of the chassis is in a particularly favourable position for constructing bodies which, in appearance and design, are most suited to their own chassis. They have always recognized the fact that engineering and body building go hand in hand in the equipment of vehicles, and consider that the construction of both chassis and bodies should be equally sound.
The body-building department covers a large portion of the Vulcan works, finding employment for a large staff of body constretttors. The work is done in sections, each of which forms a sub-department with its own expert staff. Thus, in the sawmills, parts are cut to pattern or to special design. The eat parts are assembled by jig and passed on through various sections until the body is completed for mounting on the chassis. In this way the parts pass through the panelling section, the painting section (where the most up-to-date methods of spray-painting are employed), the trimming section (equipped with every modern upholstering device), and so on until the finishing department is reached, where all internal accessories are fitted prior to the body being mounted on the chassis.
The Vulcan range embraces a wide diversity of bodies, as in commercial vehicle construction practically every trade is catered for, whilst the company specializes in passenger vehicles of many types.
On the passenger side it will be recalled that the Vulcan Co. set the fashion for the low-loading bus at the Commercial Vehicle Show at Olympia nearly two years ago, when their safety coach was first exhibited, this being the pioneer of British-built low-loading buses.

With regard to van bodies, a number of types are produced by the Vulcan Co. Light vans of the box and tilt type are supplied to practically every trade—in many cases where they had previously been deemed inapplicable. •
