Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IT has always been the policy of Henry Garner, Ltd., to help the coachbuilders of the country to obtain orders and to fit bodies to 'Garner chassis, which, of course, is very sound, for the coachbuilder is then close at hand to the customer, and in many final points the latter is readily

available for discussion. The commercial motor has found its way into the transport service of every industry and every occupation, and the average British buyer is as keen to-day as ever he was to secure the incorporation of his own ideas in any plant that he may use in his business. Hence, Garners give the coachbuilder the most complete information and supply working drawings, and they offer the loan of their standard cab and body designs when orders are given fer their chassis.

Many customers, naturally, desire the Garner standard bodywork or to have their own special ideas carried out by the chassis makers, and some of the products of the Tyseley works may here be referred to. In the standard lorry with hinged sides the cab is designed for quick production by jig-building. It is of pleasing design, and the driver's comfort has received every consideration. It is framed in hard woods with all joints put together with white lead and well screwed and bolted, the sides being of pIymax, which is light and durable. The body is entirely separated from the cab, and the hinges are of Garner design, made from angle steel with bushes welded in, in order to give proper strength without undue weight at the points of high stress.

Tipping lorries, tilt vans, platform lorries, country carriers, bus vans, buses and coaches are among the normal products of the works, many of them with original features that make for economic and effective operation. Thus, on a 12-ft. wheelbase it is possible to give a loading length behind the driver of 21 ft.' 6 ins., or 7 ins, additional length by the use of cowls in. the dash to give space for pedal operation.

The scheme which has been evolved and patented for obtaining accessibility to overtype engines either at the roadside or in the garage has resulted in an extensive call for vehicles of the type. The whole of the side of the cab, wing and door are made to swing outwards, being secured in position by two stout coach bolts through the floor and a cab-roof head lock at the top of the windscreen. The worker is thus able to get close up to his work instead of having to reach across the wing and attempt whatever task he may have in hand from an awkward position and in a harrow space. We have had ample evidence that users

appreciate the merits of this arrangiiment. One of the special vans made by Garners for carrying plate glasS has proved so successful that the owners use it now for long journeys from London. to Yorkshire and the northern counties. Thegoading space behind the driver is 14 ft., the front of the body being slatted to reduce windage and the tarpaulin cover being laced in position. With plate glass it is important that the body should ride very steadily; and this attribute is attained in the Garner vehicle.

We need not here deal with the bus van, which was recently fully described in The Commercial Motor, but an interesting vehicle examined by us the other day is to the specifications of Mr. It Hoggins, of the Birmingham Corporation Baths Department, for the purpose of carrying laundry and giving facilities for either side or rear loading. The lower portions of the side consist of panelled cratches, the upper portions being roller shutters sliding in channels up into the roof. This van is of very attractive appearance, and

has proved very successful in operation. It is panelled throughout with plymax.
