New names and a larger number of trade visitors were attracted to the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers exhibition at Telford. Colin Sowman reports on a lively show

• Several new names were evident and new products on show at 11th Federation of Engine Remanufacturers exhibition at its new Telford venue — a move which followed calls by FER members to stage the event in the Midlands. Attendance doubled.

In the largest FER exhibition to date, 53 exhibitors displayed everything from humble gaskets to remanufactured engines and heavy-duty crankshaft grinding machines. This reflects the growing market for reconditioned products.

Proprietary engine manufacturers were represented by Gardner and its parent company Perkins. Last year Gardner launched its Power Exchange Programme, in which engines are remanufactured at the factory using genuine Gardner parts. Conversions, such as fitting a turbocharger and other parts to uprate a 6LXB to a &ACT, are also carried out at Patricroft.

Perkins offers three levels of overhaul, from full remanufacturing down to overhaul kits. Overhaul kits include pistons, liners, a full set of crank shells, seals and gaskets. They are available for older Perkins engines at around £350 ex-value added tax, depending on the model. A kit for the new Phaser engine will be available soon_

A valve-guide bushing kit made by the American K-Line company was demonstrated by its recently appointed UK and European agent, G E Bissell of Halseowen. Designed for use on cast-iron valve guides, the kits of tools and bushes enable a phosphor bronze insert to be securely fixed into the worn valve guide and the original valve can then be reused if it is serviceable.

The guide is in-line bored with a special tool to allow the insert to be driven in, again with a special tool. Once in place a series of broaches are used to make the hole the right size for the valve stem. Bissell claims that an experienced fitter would take less than two minutes to fit an insert into a worn guide. Tests in the US by the manufacturer indicate that the bush may last longer than the original cast-iron guide.

Endoscopes are optical devices designed for inspecting inside confined spaces (such as inside an engine) without needing to dismantle the item under scrutiny. Their use is widespread in the aerospace industry but cost has stopped most vehicle workshops from acquiring this useful item. However, All Inspection, a leading supplier of endoscopes, has just introduced a new basic kit specifically for the motor vehicle workshop and at a much reduced price.

The All Inspection kit is a 330mm (13 inches) rigid probe that carries its own light and provides a 70° angle of view. Power for the small bulb is provided by a remote battery pack connected via a long cable. With this kit most engines, except IDI diesels, can be internally examined by inserting the probe through the injector or spark-plug holes. The basic kit costs 2446.25 excluding VAT; carriage is extra.

Nicro of Stroud, importer of the well known Fled-Hone, has extended its range to include the Elast-Hone. This is a rotating disc with abrasive grit on raised areas of the disc's face. Designed for use on external surfaces, like hydraulic rams, the Elast-Hone comes in a range of abrasives from 180 grit to 800 grit, and Nicro claims that a surface finish of 0.04-0.06 mu RA (ground surfaces are normally around 0.10.5) is possible.

The disc is fixed to its backing pad by Velcro, which is then placed into a drill or other means of rotation and spun at 5001,00Orpm. Disc life is equal to the FlexiHone and cqsts excluding value added tax from £10.7010 £11.50 depending on grit.

A new name in the remanufacturing field is that of Equipment, Parts, Sales and Service (EPSS) which is aiming at the Cummins and Detroit Diesel aftermarket. General manager Terry Venner spent six years running the Cummins engine reconditioning plant at Cumbemauld before leaving to help set up the new company.

EPSS specialises in salvaging severely damaged blocks and components and does not levy a surcharge on units put in for exchange. Also marketed are DIY rebuilt kits for Cummins and Detroit Diesels.

Workshops with an unserviceable unit to exchange may find help from P and M Components. While the company usually deals directly with the remanufacturers, it will supply components to individual businesses from the 5,000 plus engines and gearboxes which are stripped a week.

ASC Engine Components and Spares can now supply new, fully machined cylinder heads for some popular commercial vehicles. Heads held in stock include those for Damler-Benz, Leyland Daf Vans, Land Rover and Deutz. ASC claims that its prices are below those of the original manufacturers.

Bristol Engineering has amalgamated with the ex-Swindon based Howard Tenents Engines and extended its range of remanufactured engines beyond those fitted to buses and coaches to include ones used in heavy trucks. Petrol and smaller diesel (2.5 litres and below) engines will be handled by the ex-Howard Tennents Engines, now renamed HTE operating

from Bristol Engineering's premises.

Following its take-over of KorodyColyer, CR Industries has launched a new attack on the Cummins aftermarket in the UK. While keeping the KorodyColyer name, its engine parts will be distributed from CR's warehouse.

Another company now providing re manufactured components in the truck industry is Trent, which for 25 years was known as Potteries Diesel Service. Now, with a new name and extended premises, Trent has extended its range of remanufactured electrical and fuel components to

cover those used on commercial vehicles.

Two of the largest names in motor factoring took extensive stands at Telford. Both GKN Autoparts and Quality Engine Parts (QEP) stock items for commercial vehicles and have extensive distribution networks throughout the UK.
