Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Management was at fault in 60% of fatal accidents in the transport industry between 1978 and 1980 and the new Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations will place more respondibility on management in the future. Workshop has taken a quick look at how some accidents can be prevented.

Petrol can be removed through the filler cap of vehicles by special pumps which are electrically isolated and earthed against static sparks manufactured by James H Vickery and Fire Reliant. David Jaina set up Tipsafe after losing a hand when a jack failed and a vehicle dropped onto his ann. Tipsafe makes two types of props, one for vehicles with wheels removed and the other for elevated tipper bodies. Vehicle props require special brackets attached to the chassis; these can be transferred when the vehicle is replaced. The props cost £65 and are adjustable in 25mm (1 inch) increments. Props for tippers come in pairs, remain on the vehicle, cost £168 per set and weigh 6kg each.

Fumes can either be extracted (see page 14) or the person working in the affected

area can use a mask or a separate air supply. MoldexMetric manufactures a simple face mask called PuraMask to prevent breathing in dust from friction linings. A clean air supply is required when spraying two-pack paints. Martindale manufactures a range of respirators which start from under £140, depending on the operating environment. Neoterik is a manufacturer of piped air equipment, it has products designed for use when spraying two-pack paints. Sikkens produces a nonisocyanate two pack paint.

Noise Surveys will carry out tests and provide recommendations for improvements, where necessary, to stay within the new noise regulations. Carpenter and Paterson makes a range of acoustic enclosures and panels.

Protection for feet is also important. Totectors makes protective shoes for all well managed workshops. Del Group offers a range of ski care products from cleanser to barrier creams.
