Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AHIGH purity mixture of 80 per cent. argon and 20 per cent, carbon dioxide, called Argomix, is now being marketed by The British Oxygen Co.. Ltd. It is intended for welding mild steel by the MIG (bare wire, gas shielded) process and can be used on sheet metal and heavy plate.

Argomix takes the place of carbon dioxide or, in some cases, argon-oxygen mixture, and has several operating and economic advantages. It is supplied in 240 cu. ft. cylinders at a pressure of 1,980 p.s.i.

In sheet metal welding, with the new dip-transfer technique, Argomix is claimed to give faster welding speeds with less spatter and a smoother profile. It operates at lower arc voltages than with CO., and gaps can be bridged more easily.

Similar advantages can be achieved in clownhand and horizontal vertical fillet welding of heavy plate at high currents.
