T'YPICAL of Modern light fire-fight 1 ing apparatus, and representative of the range of such equipment made and
marketed by Sigmund Pumps (Great
Britain), Ltd., Team Valley, Gates head-on-Tyne, the outfit shown in the accompanying picture is now in the service of Colwyn Bay Corporation. It comprises a fire tender having a Morris Commercial chassis as its basis and a 350-500-g.p.m. trailer unit.
Being a standard Sigmund product, and of a type with wide appeal for • A.R.P. and other purposes—not excluding agricultural spheres—the latter is perhaps of the greater general interest. It is designated the Sigma and is, for its class, a powerful and well-equipped fire fighter.
Powered by a four-cylindered 25 h.p. engine, with an output at 3,100 r.p.m. of 72 b.h.p., it incorporates a two-stage pump, capable of delivering from 350 g.p.m. at 160 lb. per sq. in. to 500 g.p.m. at SO lb. per sq. in. The pump is of gunmetal with phosphor-bronze impeller and stainless-steel shaft.
The suction side takes 4-in, hose and there are three discharge valves with 24-in. couplings. Priming is effected by a two-cylindered piston-type device. Four 8-ft. lengths of suction hose are provided and the same number of 100-ft. lengths of delivery hose. A variety of equipment is offered including a C.T.0 . extinguisher, a searchlight, and foam-generating apparatus.
Of Sigmund make, the trailer is a sturdy unit with overrun brakes, reversing catch and adjustable folding handles, whilst safety skids are provided at the rear for protection of the undercarriage when traversing rough ground. Shod with 6.5 by 20 tyres the wheels are detachable.
