Local Authorities Operating Bus Services.

The Editor. TELE COMMERCIAL MOTOR..

[25061 Sir,—May I point out two small errors in the "List of Local Authorities Operating Motorbus Services" (lh 523 of.the,Special Municipal Number)? The commencement of services in Widnes is therein given as 1914, yet in your " Coming-of-age " Number (centre pages) was a photo of "a fleet of enclosed double-deck buses supplied to Widnes Corporation in 1969. The chassis are still in use."

Then Leigh is asterisked as a place where " motorbuses provide all the local transport facilities." As a matter of fact, the great bulk of road passengers in the Leigh district is carried by the Lanes United Transport and Power Co., which owns both trams and buses. The trams run right through the centre of Leigh borough.—Yours faithfully, C.S.D. Bolton.

Canada's Import Duties.

The Editor, THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

[2507] Sir,—Referring to the article in the issue of The Commercial Motor for May 25th, headed, "Canadian Budget Benefits British Makers," the duty rates are not quite correctly stated, for they should be 22 per cent„ less 10 per cent. under British preference, the general rate being 35 per cent. The benefit under the new tariff, therefore, is If per cent., and not 10 per cent. as stated in your article.

Now, whereas, Under the new tariff, the British manufacturer is able to reduce his prices in Canada to the extent of 7.1 per cent., the American manufacturer is able to refill& his prices 15 per cent. Hence, the American manufacturer to-day is much better off, and in a much better position to compete with the British manufacturer hi Canada.

Again, whereas the .British manufacturer has the initial gain of having 71 per cent. less duty to pay than the American manufacturer, this 7i per cent, is easily wiped out owing to the extra cost Of packing and freight from England against the comparatively small cost of shipping chassis (uncrated) from the U.S.A.

Finally, it means that, under the new tariff rates, the British manufacturer trying to sell vehicles in Canada is worse off than under the pld tariff rates when considering American competition.

Your article gives the impression that the British manufacturer has now the advantage, but it really is not so, because the American manufacturer is the only one to consider in Canada, there being no actual commercial-vehicle manufacturers in Canada outside of Fords, The so-called Canadian-made truck is really, in the major part, built up of American components.— Yours faithfully,

THORNYCROFT (CANADA), LTD.'

Trailers for Low Loading.

The Editor, THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

[2,508] Sir,—With reference to the article entitled "Cheapening Transport by Using Trailers," which appeared in your issue dated „rime 22nd, we would point out that the illustration of the low-loading refuse-col lecting trailer, in which a man of average height is shown tipping the contents of a dustbin from his shoulder into the receiver, depicts one of the many models manufactured by us, and not as described in the caption.

We would like you to draw special attention to this point, as we consider it of importance that the public should know that we are in a position to produce this particular type of trailer.—Yours faithfully,

London. J. A. TAYLOR, Sales Manager,

Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd. {We regret the error which occurred in describing this trailer, and, as requested, reproduce below the illustration in question.—ED.]
