Whittle Belting.
In most of the largest commercial-vehicle and accessory works throughout the country Whittle belting, as manufactured by Thomas Whittle and Sons, Rose and Crown Street, Warrington, is used for driving some form of machine installation. Of course, as is.generally known, this class of belting is used for a wide variety of purposes.
This belting is a combination of leather and steel links, and it is so constructed that the surface which comes into contact with the pulley is of leather, and, moreover, it is of wide area. Whittle belting is manufactured specially for use in V pulleys, and owing to the flexible qualities which it possesses, it grips the contact surface so firmly that even if the belt is a little slack it will continue to drive easily. Although it grips so lightly, we understand that there is no tendency whatever on the part of the belt to jam in the pulley. It leaves the pulley quite freely and runs equally as well at high or low speeds. The manufacturers state that the bending or internal friction from which some forms of belting suffer is entirely absent when the Whittle belt is used. It thus absorbs less power. The belting is made from selected leather, which is considered to be indc structible. It is in no way affected by dust and grit, and runs juSt as well in a wet or. dry condition. A distinct advantage with this particular make of belting is that no belt fasteners are required. All that is necessary when it is desired to shorten or lengthen the belt is simply to pull it apart at any link after withdrawing one screw. Many other claims are made for this belting which have been substantiated by several prominent makers in the commercial-vehicle industry, who use Whittle belts to a great extent. The fact that it has been standardized for fan and dynamo drives on a number of English, French, and Italian industrial machines should be ample testimony as to its reliability.
Spares for Tylor Engines.
A problem of considerable magnitude for the user of old and well-worn vehicles is the obtaining of spare parts. If we needed evidence of the importance of this, the voluminous correspondence in connection with our spare-part bureau would afford it. The owner of a new or modern machine is of course, troubled to a lesser degree now in dais respect. Not only is his machine in the ordinary way unlikely to need frequent attention, but the makers, as a rule, have ample supplies of spare parts available. Accidents, however, may happen in any circumstances and at any time, hence it behoves every user to have for ready reference complete lists of the parts of his chassis, so that he may quickly and accurately order anything which he requires without risk of his order being misunderstood. It is the exception rather than the rule for orders for spares to be correctly worded.
There are large numbers of vehicles now on the road fitted with the Tyler engine. Users of these vehicles will, therefore, appreciate the knowledge that J. Tyler and Sons, Ltd., Belle Isle, York Road, London, N., has just issued a very complete list of spare parts for Tylor engines, We strongly advise all owners of machines fitted with these capable power units to obtain immediate possession of a copy. No doubt a written request to the address given will result in the despatch of the desired copy by return of post.
