MIDLAND EXPRESSWAY'S (MEL) decision to slash the charge for trucks using the M6 Toll to £6 has been welcomed by operators and trade associations.
The cut follows criticism that the toll operator had priced trucks off the road. Estimates say HGVs account for less than 1% of traffic using the UK's first toll motorway; this is believed to be 80% below MEL's target for truck traffic.
The day rate for HGVs will now be £5.11 (ex-VAT) while the night rate is down to £4.26 (ex-VAT) fora trial period until the end of the year.
Geoff Dossetter, the Freight Transport Association's external affairs director, says: "The 40% cut reduces the annual cost for a return journey five days per week from £5,000 to £3,000."
Steve Cope, transport manager for Stan Robinson, says the firm is reconsidering using the road: "One driver used the toll road for the first time last week and it was beneficial, but the supplier paid the cost."
However. Martin Wiles from BCWiles & Sons sees no benefit to using the toll road because the M6 is less congested now.
