An Oldham company wafts for the fate of its 0-licence following a tvvo-day public inquiry. Michael Jewell reports.
MAPLE INDUSTRIES, which holds a restricted licence for 20 vehicles, has been called before the North Western Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell at a Leeds disciplinary inquiry.
The TC was looking at its fitness to hold a licence and its financial standing.
For the company, Neil Cameron said there was a letter from Barclays Bank saying an account with a credit balance of £50,000 would be opened within the next 24 hours. Asked about a county court judgment relating to Craftsman Kitchens and Craftsman Kitchens Manufacturing, Maple's owner, notorious kitchen salesman Vance Miller, said an order had been made in his absence. He defended an alleged breach of that order himself and was jailed. He was released last July.
Miller explained that his new company's draft accounts did not reflect a true picture of the state of Maple Industries — the accountants would have to redo them. After examining them the TC pointed out that they had been approved by the board in May and signed by Miller.
Miller admitted he had signed them because he was told that they were correct. He had realised they were wrong an hour ago as all the figures seemed too low.
Cameron said Miller's lack of delegation had led to problems but the company's transport operations had since been turned around.
The TC will announce her decision in writing.
