to the M25 between junctions 11 (A317) and 15 (A4) have emerged (CM 410 March). For the first time, red circular mandatory signage will be used to distinguish the new signs from the current electronic variable limits on motorway gantries—these are advisory. Unlike the current variable signs, the new electronic limits will he enforceable.
Traffic sensors will monitor the flow of traffic and one of two limits, 50mph or 60mph, will flash up inside a red circle on gantries over this stretch of the M25.
The DOT says the new variable limits are experimental and are expected to be operative in a year to 15 months time. It is not ruling out introducing them on other motorways.
