E New Botany Shed in the Port of Man
chester's Bridgewater Department has been established as Britain's first operational inland container depot of its kind, having been set up specifically for the handling of roadborne traffic. It is located at Water Street, less than a halfmile from the city centre.
Operations there actually started when the Manchester Liners Ltd. container service to Chicago was inaugurated last March and facilities are now to be provided for other container services. During the next 12 months or two years a close study is to be made of the work that arises so as to decide the pattern of future development of the depot.
By use of the Manchester Container Clearing Depot qua) and transit shed. operations for general cargo should be enabled to maintain at least the same rhythm as actual ship working in connection with containers. With the new system importers will be able easily to deal with several consignments packed in one container but directed to different destinations in Britain. and exporters will be able to collect together a number of different items for shipment in the one container.
In the past Customs clearance facilities have normally been available only in docks areas or elsewhere by special arrangement, the latter usually involving the deposit of heavy bonds before a container has been permitted to leave the port. In the case of Manchester there has been close co-operation with 1-IM Customs in the development of the scheme and, the premises being part of the port organization, it is understood that clearance formalities will not be radically different from those at ports in general.
Actually it will be possible for containers imported or exported through any port in the country to be cleared at the depot instead of at the point of entry or shipment.
