Lt.-Col. Frank Bustard, 80 years old, is the 1965 winner of the Viva Shield presented each year by the Worshipful Company of Carmen for the most outstanding achievement in the field of transport. The award was given in recognition of his pioneering work in the development of the roll-on/roll-off ferry service. Lt.-Col. Bustard inaugUrated the Transport Ferry Service shortly after the last war, using former Admiralty tank landing craft. TFS was taken over by the British Transport Commission in 1954.

Jack Harper has been appointed group sales director of the Primrose Group, with effect from August 1, and will operate from the group's head office in Burnley. Mr. Harper will be leaving Clitheroe, where he was based as managing director of TGB Motors Ltd. and PDS Fabrications Ltd. These two companies in the Primrose Group will in future be controlled by Brian Mulligan, who has been appointed general manager of them.

The International Road Federation has awarded a study fellowship in the United States to a Northern Ireland traffic engineer, Robert Hewitt, who is a senior engineer with the Craigavon Development Commission at Portadown.

J. A. Proudlove has been appointed to the newly established chair of transport studies at the University of Liverpool. He is at present lecturer in the department of civil engineering.

In the July 8 issue, reference was made to W. H. Simpson, of CAV Ltd., as being southeastern area manager. This should have read north-eastern area. Because of increased business commitments, L. W. Orchard has resigned from the Board of Clayton Dewandre Holdings Ltd., and also as a director of the company. S. J. Barnes, deputy chairman and managing director, has been appointed chairman. Mr. Barnes became managing director of the company on January 1, 1962, when the holding company was set up. He was appointed deputy chairman on May 18 this year.

OBITUARY

We regret to record the deaths of Joe Baker, Norman Letts and Gerald Wernher.

Mr. Baker was sales manager of The Power Petroleum Co. Ltd. until his retirement at the end of 1964. He had been with the company for nearly 39 years.

Mr. Letts was a member of Mawby. Barrie and Letts, solicitors to the Road Haulage Association.

Mr. Wernher entered the removal industry in 1946 and was head of four companies, including Chase Removals. He had been chairman of the Institute of the Furniture, Warehousing and Removing Industry in 1962-3 and in May this year was elected junior vice-president of the National Association of Furniture Warehousemen and Removers.
