" Comnter Car" Chars-a-banes.

The illustration at the foot of this page presents two views of a " Cornmer Car " char-h-banos, which is touring the country in charge of Mr. W. W. Perks, of the staff of Commercial Cars, Ltd. Mr. Perks has had a very successful season this year. In the Ilfracombe district, lately, steps have been taken to form a local syndicate, with a view to services to connect Lynton, Parracombe„ Coombe Martin, Clovelly. and other villages. The 3234 h.p. engine easily enabled the vehicle to surmount Parracombe Hill under full load, including a stop and re-start on the steepest gradient.

Recent " Cm:inner Car " orders for passenger vehicles include a 23-seated char-a-banes for Mr. A. Knaggs of Promenade Mews, Bridlington.

Croydon's Threat to Ratepayers.

A letter, written by a Mr. Ryder, of Croydon, which was published in "The Croydon Advertiser," and upon arliicEwe commented in our issue for the 1st July, has been followed by a number of indignant correspondents in the same journal, who deny that the motorbuses are responsible for the poor state of the road surfaces on the route. The tramway officials' pathetic appeal by placard to the public, "do, please, use the tramways " is very little short of impudence. On the Norwood-Croydon route—one of the few services which pay for their upkeep—the standards are labelled with these appeals ; on this same route, as there is no alternative, the service is entirely insufficient. Where there is plenty of traffic for the asking the trains are all too few for comfort, but where a competitive service is inaugurated the service is doubled—all to little purpose. The ratepayers are told, however, that they must either use the trams or pay for others to do

Clarkson Steamers.

The National Steam Car Co., Ltd., with its registered office at Moulsham Works, Chelmsford, and with an authorized capital of £6,000 in £1 shares, has been formed with the objects of establishing public motor services—in London and elsewhere— and of manufacturing steam vehicles. This will be recognized as a concern in which Mr. Thomas Clarkson is directly interested, and we shall look for early developments as a result of the new arrangement.
