TEN ILLEGAL immigrants were discovered in the back of two lorries at Shardlow Services on the A50 last week.

The discovery by UK Border Agency officers comes just a week after 39 stowaways were found in the back of two container lorries, pictured below, in Norfolk ('German haulier 'unaware' of human cargo'. CM 22 January).

Recently,. the agency ran a pilot operation sending a mobile detention van across the Midlands and East England, which led to the discovery of 18 illegal immigrants,14 at Corley services alone.

It also resulted in: • Four lorries being detained and £5,000 recovered in unpaid civil penalties • Three lorries being impounded • A Lithuanian lorry driver being arrested for drink driving • Two illegal immigrants discovered in lorries at South Mimms services In the most recent case, the UK Border Agency says most of the eight adults and two minors were from Afghanistan.

A spokesman adds: "We are determined to crack down on people who try to smuggle themselves into the UK in lorries. We are committed to responding to every police request where they arrest people who have been smuggled into the UK in lorries."
