• Mr Alan Law, the Birmingham district secretary, commercial transport, of the TGWU, is reported to be formulating plans for a new substantial pay claim, to be submitted in the next two months, for 11,000 lorry drivers attached to some 300 Birmingham and West Midlands haulage
firms. The claim is likely to be based on "the chronic shortage of drivers resulting from the new stringent heavy goods vehicle test requirements" and Mr Law has said that "drivers are now in a powerful position to demand good money".
