THE transport manager of a delivery fleet in Natal, South Africa, has devised a novel piece of equipment for quickly remedying fuel-supply failures on oil-engined vehicles. This is the most common fault on his vehicles. which deliver food and must not be delayed.
A mechanic sent out to a vehicle which has broken down does not attempt to trace the fault but merely installs special emergency fuel-feed equipment in the cab.
This consists of a 4-gal. drum on which is mounted an electric feed pump and a filter. The output from the pump passes into a flexible delivery pipe, which is joined direct to the injection pump. Wanderleads connect the terminals of the feed pump to any convenient supply, such as the battery or the fuse box.
After the system has been bled, the vehicle can continue on its round and then return to the depot for rectification of the fault.
