WILL SOUTHEND SELL TO COMPANY?
WILL Southend-on-Sea Corporation VV merge its transport undertaking with that of Westcliff-on-Sea Motor Services, Ltd.? This question has been under consideration for some time, and it seems to be no nearer solution than it was some two years ago. Last week, the town council referred back for consideration at a special meeting the transport committee's report, which opposed a complete amalgamation of interests.
For some time the transport committee has been considering proposals submitted by Mr. J. F. Heaton, managing director of Thomas Tilling, Ltd. (with which Westcliff-on-Sea Motor Services, Ltd., is associated), for the amalgamation of the municipal transport undertaking.
The corporation appointed Mr. A. R. Fearnley, Sheffield Corporation's transport manager, as consultant. He recommended that the corporation should not transfer control of its undertaking, but that an attempt should be made to reach •a working agreement with the Westcliff company, with a view to avoiding unnecessary competition. The transport committee unanimously accepted this recommendation, A report by the previous transport manager at Southend, Mr. Ben England, favoured a merger. He declared that there could be few towns, such as Southend, in which the transport con ditions were so chaotic. _ BIG STATION FOR HARTLEPOOL.
