MORE A.R.O. AREAS GO OVER TO C.M.U.A.

Meetings of the C.M.U.A, were held, last week, at Exeter, Torquay and in North Devon. At each meeting, Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer, explained the new policy of the Association, and he urged that the road-transport industry should have the same opportunity of development as any other industry.

In connection with these meetings, it is announced that the A.R.O. committees in the Exeter Area, and the Torquay and North Devon Sub-areas, have resigned en bloc and have now joined U p with the C.M.U.A. Meetings of these committees have been held and a decision has been made to form a Devon Division of the C.M.U.A., the three committees having been re-elected for the time being to organize the division.

Mr. A. R. Smith, late secretary of A.R.O. in Exeter, has been appointed secretary of the C.M.U.A. for the Devon Division.

I.T.A. and A.R.O. to Hold Joint Meeting.

A joint meeting of the Industrial Transport Association and the Southern Area of A.R.O. is to be held at Southampton on February 8, when Mr. R. W. Sewill, national director of A.R.O., will speak on the subject of road transport in peace and war.

S.T.R. in West Midlands Next Week.

Final arrangements have been made for the lectures to be given by S.T.R. The Commercial Motor costs expert, at Hanley and Wellington next week. The meeting at Hanley will take place on February 2, at 7.30 p.m., at the Angel Hotel, and that at Wellington at the Cock Hotel, on February 3, also at 7.30 p.m. They are now under A.R.O. auspices.

Watford Sub-area for C.M.U.A.

When the C.M.U.A. held a meeting at Watford on Monday, the chair was taken by Councillor T. H. Simmons, chairman of A.R.O. Watford Sub-area. In his opening remarks, Councillor Simmons explained that, as a member of A.R.O., he attended the meeting with an open mind, and he hoped that those present would do the same.

Mr. W. A. \Vinson dealt with the subject of rates and wages, and he ex-, plained the benefits of co-ordination and the value of membership of the C.M.U.A. The revised policy of the Association was fully dealt with by Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer. Capt. J. R. Maidens also spoke.

It was decided to establish a branch of the C.M.U.A. in Watford, and a further meeting is to he held shortly to discuss the election of officers.

A.R.O.-C.M.U.A. Dinner Cancelled.

'The A.R.O.-C.M.U.A.' dispute, having now affected this area, has made it utterly impossible for the dinner which had been arranged for March 20, to take place." This statement has been made to The Commercial Motor by Mr. S. M. Macadam, chairman, and

Wellington to Support A.R.O.

A resolution in support of the Association was passed at a meeting of the Wellington Sub-area of A.R.O., last week. Mr. F. Brentnall Beard, who was recently .appointed honorary secretary of the joint C.M.U.A.-A.R.O. organization in this sub-area, is to continue to act in that capacity for A.R.O. C.M.U.A.'s PART IN AMENDING • BILL.

The Road Traffic Bill to amend Section 61 of the 1930 Act and Section 3 of the 1933 Act, presented in Parliament by Sir Assheton Pownall, received its second reading, last Friday, without a division, and the C.M.U.A. was able to submit various memoranda and detailed information to members of the Parliamentary Road Group, •dealing. with the provisions of the Bill. As a result of this assistance, there was valuable discussion on the Bill, especially with regard to Clause 2, which proposes to give the Minister power to prescribe a longer period for A, B and C licences.

The C.M.U.A. is preparing other information and amendments, which will be put forward during the committee stage of the Bill.

Safeguarding Established Hauliers in

Municipal Contracts.

With a view to ensuring that newcorners should not take contracts from established hauliers who have previously supplied municipal authorities, the South-Eastern Area hauliers' board of A.R.O. is taking steps to bring the attention of the councils concerned to this matter.

It is intended to ask that the councils should, in their contracts for the supply of haulage, include conditions . specifying that tenders would be accepted only from such firms as were, at the time of tendering, holders of licences appropriate to the services required.

No Grants for Slippery Roads?

The Ministry of Transport's recent report on " Road Surface Resistanct to Skidding" was referred to by Mr. E. H. W. Tucker,. chairman of the Motor Cab Owner-Drivers' Association, at the Association's annual dinner in London.

"I suggest that the Ministry should go one step further," Mr. Tucker said, "and make grants for road work only when "the surface to be provided is one of those types which are stated in the report to remain non-skid after.a period of years, without maintenance costs."

A.R.O. Opens Lancs. Campaign.

Mr. R. Hindley, F.S.A.A., chairman of East Lancashire Area of A.R.O., announces that it has been decided to hold a series of meetings in various parts of the district, to follow up the recent satisfactory mass meeting in Manchester. Activities began with a meeting at ..9.1trincham-regarded as one of the A.R.O. strongholds-on Tuesday.

Mr. Hindley states : " The object is not to vilify anyone, but to secure an increase in membership: There has been little falling away in the area.; such withdrawals as there have been are in the passenger section, and, on the other hand, we have had a number of new applications."
