• British Industry could save 1100m a year in transport costs by forging closer relationships in the supply chain and using fewer hauliers, says recent research for the Institute of Logistic.
Savings could be made by reducing the need for "panic" deliveries and consolidating the number of hauliers needed to deliver to individual companies.
The research, conducted by management consultants AT Kearney and the Manchester School of Management, says that a closer partnership between suppliers and customers could save ,£2.4bn or 6% of purchased material costs.
The report adds weight to the Government's argument that empty lorry journeys must be reduced.
