Bein9 a waste inspector might not sound the most glamourous of occupations but judging by a recent decision by the Environment Agency, it could soon have its share of thrills and spills.
The inspectors, it seems, are being trained in unarmed combat to confront the "scrap metal dealer with two rotiweilers and a more than angry expression on his face." The inspectors have also been given police training which includes the use of clip-on ties to avoid strangulation and ultra-sonic devices to stun dogs. The Environment Agency has been formed by amalgamating 1,000 staff from local authorities, the National Rivers Authority and the Pollution Inspectorate. It officially comes into being on 1 April. lam told no significance should be attached to the chosen date.
