Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Whether noise reduction is most realistically achieved by partial encapsulation, by engine redesign, or both, Perkins Engines Ltd is confident that the noise level of its diesels will be reduced to 80 dBA before long. This was said at a press demonstration of a new noise cell in Peterborough.

The cell can be used for noise testing diesel engines of up to 350 bhp and of complete tractive units weighing as much as 25,000lb.

The effect of turbocharging, eg to control the rate of pressure rise in the cylinder, could, it was claimed, lead to inherently quieter combustion at any speed; and at the same time assist in reducing exhaust emissions.
