I At a meeting of Sunderland Corportion's transport committee, it was reported hat a deficit of £280,000 was expected for le current year and for 1973-4 the loss ould be £500,000. The undertaking is to e taken over next April by Tyneside PTA, nd Cllr Peter Wood said he wished they ould have handed over an undertaking rhich was paying its way.
Mr Alan Wright, transport manager,
said that a modest fare increase would wipe out the current deficit, and he pointed out that there had been no fares rise since August 1970. It had always been the Corporation's policy to subsidize transport in order to keep fares at a reasonable level. Cllr M. Quayle said that local car parks were subsidized to the extent of 4p per passenger. By comparison, the subsidy on the buses was nothing.
