• Shopkeepers at Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham, have introduced a free bus service carrying customers to the town's shopping centre from the recently opened bus station. The traders have complained that the bus station, which cost £48,000, is too remote from the shopping centre and was losing traders thousands of pounds in business. A single-decker minibus has been hired for £50 a week to carry shoppers from and to the bus station. In the meantime, Houghton-le-Spring urban council is discussing the problem with the Northern Area Licensing Authority.
