MISS SPRINGCLEAN is the sobriquet of a certain Miss Rosamund James who arrived at the FHB vehicle fragmentation plant in St. Helens one morning a week or two back in a midnight-blue Rolls-Royce.
The car has been placed at her disposal for her official duties by Mr. Alexander Cussons, head of the Cussons Group and a member of the "Operation Springclean" Council. This body has opened a campaign, to continue until next June, aimed at brightening up the North West.
In addition to the Standing Conference of N.W. Local Authorities, the plan has an impressive list of sponsors. Bodies of all kinds are being encouraged to male an active assault on grime, squalor and drabness. Among the particular targets—derelict vehicles. There are also suggestions for widespread painting, landscaping, planting of shrubs, trees and flowers—and flying flags.
