Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NEW double-paper-element filter providing fail-safe operation is to be fitted as standard equipment to all Ford D-series trucks from January 1 1968. The air cleaner replaces the oil-bath type previously fitted as standard in the D200/D800 model range and is stated to prolong engine life and to extend the interval at which servicing is required. Its introduction follows an exten sive test programme which included operating tests in South Africa and Australia.

An excessive build-up of dust in the filter progressively reduces the air supply to the cylinders and ultimately servicing is required to prevent complete "strangulation" of the engine. In contrast to the oil-bath type of air cleaner, neglect of the filter cannot result in dust or an oil/dust sludge being drawn into the engine. Serious damage cannot result from neglect and the filter can, therefore, be claimed to be fail-safe.

Truck models powered by the Ford 330 cu.in. and 360 cu.in. diesels may optionally be equipped with a double-paper filter having a stack-pipe extension behind the cab, which provides additional protection in particularly adverse dust conditions. The option of a Cyclopac 10in. cleaner is continued in the case of these power units.
