There is no doubt at all as to what has been the most important event of the year and that is the introduction of a Transport Bill that is in many ways better and in some ways worse than we were entitled to expect 12 months ago.
One of the best things to come out of the discussion with the Minister is her acceptance of the need of an NFC built on a company structure rather than in the image of the BTC. The worst is the direction of traffic to rail regardless of merit and the imposition at the last minute of fiscal measures which would do more than any other single factor to put up the cost of living in this country and to inhibit the efforts of our manufacturers to improve their exports.
