" BY efficien` mariageinent. administration and operation we have. so far, been able to meet very substantial increases in operating costs without having to apply to the 'Licensing Authority for fares increases and, with a few unimportant exceptions, our fares to-day remain at the same level as they were a generation ago." ,

Mr. J. S. Wills, M.Inst.T., chairman, made this statement at the annual general meeting of East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd„ last week. He went on: " But the enormous additional costs which we shall now have to bear make a general fare increase inevitable if we are to maintain the high standard of service to which our public has become accustomed."

A total of 31m. passengers was car ried. Revenue and mileage covered were slightly lower for the 12 months under review than for the previous year. Mr. Wills blamed the bad summer weather for this drop.

Operating costs had reached a new high level and continued to rise. Fortytwo new buses were bought during the year at a cost of £155,000. He looked forward to economics which would result from the greater carrying capacity of the vehicles and the easier working conditions for the conductors.

A further 33 new vehicles, including 10 luxury coaches, were due for delivery in 1931.
