THE ROAD Haulage Association (RHA) is continuing its call for the LGV speed limit to be raised to 50mph on the A9 in Scotland.
Chief secretary to the treasury Danny Alexander was quoted as saying last week: "[It's] clear that some of the dangerous driving on display is caused by frustrated drivers caught in long queues behind lorries and tankers."
RHA policy advisor for Scotland David Eaglesham believes speed cameras would also help improve safety along the major single-carriageway trunk road.
For safety to be improved, Eaglesham stressed that raising the A9 speed limit for LGVs to 50mph was a "vital component [...] to reduce accidents". The increase was ruled out by Transport Scotland last month.
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said the A9 Safety Group, which both the RHA and the Freight Transport Association have been involved in, reviewed accident history and speed profiles of the route before agreeing that the average speed camera system would improve road safety. "This government is the first to commit to making the A9 dual carriageway all the way from Perth to Inverness a reality," the spokeswoman said.
