SM1 4SZ EMAIL: christopherwaltontaroadtransport.com P LETTER OF THE WEEK The 50mph debate ensues OPINIONS HAVE flooded in following our lead story last week (CM 22 August). Here are a few: Trevor Green, transport manager at Wyvern Cargo, says: "Raising the speed limit for LGVs from 40mph to 50mph on most single carriageway A-roads would be a step forward. There are several reasons to support a campaign. The braking systems of modern lorries are far more efficient now than when the 40mph limit was introduced. Secondly, we should
remember that frustrated motorists attempting to overtake slow lorries cause some of the most serious and often fatal accidents. Thirdly, it would improve vehicles' productivity." Richard Fry, deputy MD at Framptons Transport Services, says: "The Road Haulage Association has been pressing for this for many years, and I raised it when I was the chairman two years ago. It resulted in the Department for Transport carrying
out a survey last year, but we are still awaiting the outcome. I am advised there haven't not been many arguments against it from any of the usual lobby groups." Ed Miles, MD at FreightForce, says: "It's no longer appropriate to restrict LGVs to 40mph on single carriage A-roads. While maintaining this outdated law, LGV drivers face abuse from car drivers, who become increasingly frustrated and perform dangerous overtaking manoeuvres."
