AFTER READING the opinion of Essex chief constable Stephen Kavanagh (CM 15 August) that LGV drivers caught on the phone while driving should be sacked, I was incensed. As the Road Haulage Association's Jack Semple points out, we are penalised more than your average motorist, as we can be banned by a traffic commissioner, get a fine and then penalty points, etc. As professional drivers we are well aware of the dangers of using phones while driving.
Maybe Essex police resources would be better spent policing the hundreds of car drivers texting and calling while on the move. I see this all day long, but I rarely see an LGV driver on the phone. Alan Black Transport manager AJ Black Haulage
