Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

only to keep down noise levels. Today's systems also have to reduce both sootand smog-generating compounds from the engine's exhaust streams as the targets or cutting emissions of particulate mater and nitrogen oxides ( NOx ) become ncreasingly stringent.

So are ArvinMeritor's products going D be ready to meet the next deadline Euro 4 in 2005) and will there be a retrofit narketP According to Clive Telford, chief ?.ngineer at the Warton Techecal Centre, ligher pressure injection and improved .urhocharging will not be enough to meet

Euro 4. Three-way catalysts may satisfy the car market, but the CV sector will need more advanced after-treatment, not just a single technical solution.

Fuel will need to be cleaner and exhaust systems will probably have something in them, but not necessarily just a catalyst—that alone will not remove particulates, Telford says.

ArvinMeritor's prime focus is with the OEM sector and its attendant high volumes, but the retrofit market is an important area that it will not ignore.

UK government incentives have already created a significant market for retrofitting catalyst and filter systems to existing vehicles. The Continuously Regenerating Trap, or CRT, from Johnson Matthey, is a well established filter system, but it may not suit every situation. For example, trucks with low-duty cycles may not have high enough temperatures in the exhaust to ensure safe regeneration of the filter. However, those with burner regeneration will ensure that the accumulated soot can be burned off the filter, no matter how the vehicle is used.
