I have never considered it good practice to smoke while driving: I well remember indulging in a bout of sneezing after getting smoke in my nostrils. A highly dangerous situation could have developed. Since then I have been opposed to cigarettes in the cab, though I know plenty of drivers won't agree.

This week the Automobile Association has issued a warning that the practice can lead to fatalities. Cigarette ends discarded from vehicles can blow into the cabins of following vehicles. But some of these extra signs are essential— a colleague who went to Longleat over the weekend tells me that one notice there warns any driver whose vehicle breaks down not to get out but wait for the white hunter".
