V. G. Baker has resigned as from August 31. both as chairman and from the board of Stevinson, Hardy and Co. Ltd. Mr. Baker will also relinquish his other offices within the group. Following the recent sucdessful take-over offer from Jessel Securities Ltd.. Oliver Jessel will be appointed chairman of Stevinson. Hardy.
John Lewis, 55. county supplies officer for Devonshire County Council is to be the next president of the Institute of Purchasing and Supply. He will take over at the annual conference at Eastbourne in September.
Lester Suffield, 58, BLMC's London sales director is to be seconded to the Ministry of Defence for two years. Mr. Suffield will take up the post of head of Defence Sales. T. W. H. Gailey, chief executive of the National Bus Company, has accepted an invitation to join the Board of Skyways Coach Air Ltd. Until the formation of the NBC, Mr. Gailey was head of the bus interests (previously the Tilling and BET Groups) of the Transport Holding Company, which holds a half share in Skyways. The Coach Air company's present plans include a nation-wide link of bus and air travel from all parts of Britain with Continental terminals served by Skyways. Two new routes—Ashford/Ostend and Luton/ Ostend—just approved by the Air Transport Licensing Board, are to be introduced next year connecting this European coach terminal with the NBC and Skyways UK network to be known as Express Coach Air, Eric Newbigging has been appointed management training manager for British Leyland with effect from September 1. Mr. Newbigging will be responsible for assisting the divisions of British Leyland to develop their training of managers and professional staff. In addition, he will advise on, and co-ordinate, the use of outside management training resources and also organize central conferences and courses. Mr. Newbigging has had extensive experience in marketing management and in management teaching both in this country and in the US. He will be responsible to Neville Patterson, British Leyland's central training manager.
John Peter Piper, technical assistant with Maidstone and District Motor Services Ltd., has been appointed assistant chief engineer of the Western Welsh Omnibus Co.. Ltd., in succession to Leslie A. Gray, who is due to retire in September after 50 years with the company.
H. B. Greenborough, 46, managing director. marketing. Shell-Mex and
BP Ltd.. has been appointed a viceOr chairman of the British Road Federation. Mr. Greenborough will be one of three BRF vice-chairmen. The others are A. C. Dune, directorgeneral of the Automobile Association, and A. P. de Boer, deputy chairman of Wm Cory and Son Ltd. As part of a series of changes in BRF's organization and committee structure, Mr. H. B. Greende Boer has also become chairman borough of a newly formed executive com mittee. Mr. de Boer is a part-time
member of the board of the National Bus Company. R. H. Phillipson, BRF secretary for the past eight years, has been appointed director.
OBITUARY
We record with regret the deaths of W. E. Blatchford and Richard C. Burnett, Mr Blatchford was managing director of Blatchfords Packers and Removers Ltd. Founder of the Blatchford Group, he continued as managing director when his group joined Devon Trading and Harveys Ltd. He was also founder of South Western Traffics Ltd., Exeter, Mr. Burnett. 68. a Stonehaven haulier, inaugurated the first daily carrier service between Stonehaven and Aberdeen. He retired due to health reasons in 1964.
